Learning Centre - Hlegu

In May 2015, we opened our first Learning Centre in Hlegu.  Here we run various courses attuned to the specific needs of our older NFE students - including Sewing and Tailoring, Conversational English, and a booster class for those hoping to enrol in other educational institutions.

There is a daily NFE class, and our school bus ferries out-of-school children to and from the class.  Additionally, we run a mobile NFE class from the LC for itinerant families.  This takes place in a remote areas where the children work.

The Learning Centre provides dormitory accommodation for those of our students who are studying in Yangon, but whose homes are in remote areas.

There are various income generating projects at the LC too - soap-making, manufacture of ice-lollies, preparation of tomato jam, sewing etc - and we encourage families to get involved.

Daw Thein Thein Htei - Principal, Learning Centre

Thein Thein, the Learning Centre Principal writes: “Our children come from families which are so poor that they rely on the earnings of their children.  They have to organize attendance at class around their work and as a result are often in a rush.   We, teachers, try to educate their parents to understand the value of education and encourage them to send the children to the class regularly.  Our reward is to see our children’s behavior change positively. Their social development improves as they become more self-confident. I hope they can contribute to society by developing their lives in future.”
